Actually I kind of do keep it a secret. I don't deny the fact that I am a martial artist if someone were to ask me. But I definitely don't advertise the fact that I train, and especially that I am a black belt.

I don't really know why, maybe because of all the preconceived notions that go along with martial arts. I train for my own pleasure and don't need anyone to speculate who I am because I train in karate. I have known friends / acquaintances that will just walk away or totally and agressivley change the subject if you bring up martial arts training at all. I definatly don't get wierd about it, but it is just not information that I volunteer upon a casual meeting.

I do think it is kind of fun to get on Yahoo Answers and talk about it though....

well I can'treally keep it a secret because I teach it for some extra income and if I didn't tell I would have no students and no extra money.
But I DON"T go around telling people i can beat the sh*t out of them (even if I can) because thats not smart

but sounds pretty good

Someone is thinking up new colors or belts all the time. It is just because they are always looking for new ways to charge their students for something.

NOTE: as for there being a Grey belt. I'll tell you a short story. A new student showed up at a class someone I know was teaching. The new student was wearing a Grey belt. The instructor asked what style he got the Grey belt in. The new student told the instructor that he had so many color belts in so many styles that he did not know what color belt he should wear to this new class. Th instructor continued to let the new student wear the Grey belt to class for a long time.

Once the purses for fights start getting to be the size they were for boxers in the 80s and 90s - like 5 million a fight ; we'll see great athletes that would've otherwise pursued one of the ball sports as well as the hidden masters you are referring to come out of little jungle villages in Vietnam and other remote places as a financial savior for their communities.
