The Secret of the Martial Arts

The Secret of the Martial Arts

Many people wonder what makes the martial artist better than the average man. They feel that there has to be more to it than their ability to defend themselves better. However, they can never seem to figure out the solution. The answer, however, is very simple. It’s that martial arts training is so much more than just self defense.

Training in the martial arts goes beyond just the physical, and you cannot actually train in the martial arts solely on the physical level. The reason the martial arts are referred to as art is because of all the mental, spiritual, and philosophical components it entails. To begin with, in order to excel in the art, one must have intimate knowledge of one’s self. This is because you can not hope to control an opponent when you can’t control yourself. Furthermore, how can you control yourself if you don’t actually know yourself?

You might be laughing at this idea and thinking, “How can I not know myself, I am myself?” However, there are many people who truly don’t know themselves. Do you have doubts about your beliefs or purpose in life? Do you find yourself wanting to be someone else? These are common symptoms of not knowing yourself, because with knowledge comes understanding, and with understanding comes acceptance.

Another reason practitioners of the art are above the “common man” is because no matter how modest they may be, they truly believe they are better. This may sound like flimsy logic, but it is completely true. I myself can attest to this. Around the time when training stops being training and starts becoming your life, you finally realize that you are superior to others. This doesn’t mean you deserve more or should be held in higher regard just that, for the most part, you are a better person than many of those around you. This thought truly affects the way you live. You start to have more confidence in your self, and you are no longer afraid to offer your opinion of situations. Also, you start to act as if you are more. This is truly separates a martial artist from others. This is the reason those around you respect and defer to you. This is the “secret” that makes you a martial artist.

It can't be much of a secret if it is on a DVD.

There are hidden techniques within every kata. Some were hidden for a variety of reasons.

As far as Dillman, I believe him to be a complete fraud. His techniques only work if you believe in them. Therefore, it is useless to learn. Any would be attacker wouldn't know that you know dim mak. if they don't know it they can believe that you are going to knock them out with a simple touch or non-touch.

However, there is some truth to vital points. It is the same principles that are taught in acupressure and acupuncture.

At one time I wasn't a believer in acupressure. Until one day I met a man that said he uses it. I didn't tell him of my skepticism. He had been hired to work the after school program where I worked. I ended up working with him a lot. I learned a few things from him. One day a teacher had a pain in her body that would go away. He had her sit down. He took his finger and thumb and placed them between her thumb and 1st finger. He began to move them around. He then told her where she was having the pain. He was correct. He then began to tell her that he was moving this pain. He told her the location of the movement. He let us know that he would remove this pain by bring it to where his thumb was and then release it. After a few minutes he state it was almost there, then he said he had it. He said it was gone. I waited to here the teacher said she was still having the pain. But she didn't. She was amazed. She sat there for a few more minutes looking for the pain. She moved her body around looking for the pain, but she no longer had any pain. Over the course of that summer He did this to several teachers that I witnessed. I was curious as to how this was done, but I never asked fearing that it would take a long time and classes to learn. By the way he is a martial artist too(capoeira). This wasn't from his martial arts training.

Once the purses for fights start getting to be the size they were for boxers in the 80s and 90s – like 5 million a fight ; we'll see great athletes that would've otherwise pursued one of the ball sports as well as the hidden masters you are referring to come out of little jungle villages in Vietnam and other remote places as a financial savior for their communities.

Someone is thinking up new colors or belts all the time. It is just because they are always looking for new ways to charge their students for something.

NOTE: as for there being a Grey belt. I'll tell you a short story. A new student showed up at a class someone I know was teaching. The new student was wearing a Grey belt. The instructor asked what style he got the Grey belt in. The new student told the instructor that he had so many color belts in so many styles that he did not know what color belt he should wear to this new class. Th instructor continued to let the new student wear the Grey belt to class for a long time.

  18. thugster17 says:

Actually I kind of do keep it a secret. I don't deny the fact that I am a martial artist if someone were to ask me. But I definitely don't advertise the fact that I train, and especially that I am a black belt.

I don't really know why, maybe because of all the preconceived notions that go along with martial arts. I train for my own pleasure and don't need anyone to speculate who I am because I train in karate. I have known friends / acquaintances that will just walk away or totally and agressivley change the subject if you bring up martial arts training at all. I definatly don't get wierd about it, but it is just not information that I volunteer upon a casual meeting.

I do think it is kind of fun to get on Yahoo Answers and talk about it though….
